Things you must know about Permanent Pacemaker Implantation Surgery
Causes
Reasons for the procedure
If the heart rate is too fast or too irregular, the heart chambers are unable to fill up with enough blood to pump out with each beat. When the body does not receive enough blood, symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, fainting, and/or chest pain may occur.
Treatment
It’s carried out under general anesthetic, which means you’ll be asleep throughout the procedure. The surgeon will attach the tip of the pacing lead to your heart and the other end of the lead is attached to the pacemaker box. This is usually placed in a pocket created under the skin in your abdomen.
Post Surgery Care
Monitor site for bleeding and infection for the first week. Bruising may be present. Avoid immersing the site in water for 3 days. Minimize arm and shoulder activity of affected arm and wear loose covering over incision for 1-2 weeks, to prevent dislodgement of new leads.
